Poker Bonus - How Does it Work

The poker world can be a confusing one, we're frequently bombarded with adverts and banners of large deposit bonuses at online poker rooms but for new players especially it's very hard to tell what they mean exactly. It's common place to see a '$1000 first deposit bonus' banner, but I think very few actually believe that you're going to be credited with an equivalent bonus just for depositing.

Here's how the poker bonus works - the majority of bonuses will be first deposit and '100% up to $1000', this means that they'll match 100% of whatever amount you deposit up to $1000. So if you deposited $55, you'd receive a $55 bonus, simple.

The part which confuses most people is how to actually reap the rewards of the bonus. Well, most of them clear at an industry standard rate of around 20%, which means that you receive 20% of whatever you rake in the form of bonus release. If you had a $1000 bonus, you'd have to rake $5000 to fully clear your bonus. The vast majority of rooms do in fact clear at 20%, some a little less and some more - it's very important to shop around to see where all the best bonuses are and find out exactly how tough it is to clear, this is all information which should be readily available but poker rooms will tell you how many 'points' you need to clear the bonus so you need to work it out from there.

Is it worth it? If you're playing online poker you'd be a fool not to take advantage of a poker bonus, or else you're losing out on precious value. Some rooms are sneaky in that they'll actually deduct the bonus amount from any other returns, such as rake back returns or reward programs, so make sure you run with a site which does not deduct the bonus from other returns! Although it's great to profit from the game, always try to have as much fun as possible, chat to friends about the game and enjoy the whole experience. If one day you turn professional or semi-professional you'll only truly be happy and successful if your enthusiasm for poker is still very strong, so although all of these strategy tips on how to improve your overall returns are beneficial, try not to lose sight of the bigger picture which ultimately comes down to happiness! Enjoy!
